The Geographies of Leisure and Tourism Research Group embraces research from across the spectrum of disciplines, with geography as the central connecting point.

The Geography of Leisure and Tourism Research Group (GLTRG) was officially founded in 2000 and is a research branch of the Royal Geographical Society, with the Institute of British Geographers. Stemming from activities of the Limited Life Working Party on the Geography of British Tourism, the GLTRG now has a global reach and encompasses tourism and leisure throughout the world. Addressing a wide range of issues including: contemporary and historical, international and domestic, production and consumption practices of tourism and leisure, the group has a thriving international membership of over 120 members.

Tourism and leisure exist within an inherently dynamic, fluid and complex world. They are no longer isolated sets behaviours and practices that take place while we are ‘on holiday’, nor does research focus solely concentrate on relationships between tourists and ‘hosts’. Rather, tourism as inherently interdisciplinary extends across a range of disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, education, management, cultural studies, economics and of course, geography, to name but a few.

The GLTRG seeks to embrace research from across the spectrum of discplines using geography as the central connecting point. Likewise, the issues addressed by GLTRG are all-embracing as we seek to develop existing and new areas of research in tourism, leisure and sport. We therefore welcome you to the site and hope that you will contribute to our debates, ideas and resources.
